The Market Common crowns Myrtle Beach with posh, urban personality

The Market Common punctuates the personality of Myrtle Beach with big city feel that is polished and implies SOHO edge.

The cool, refined and freethinking all mingle in the place people go when they want an urban experience with a down-home feel.

Hatton Gravely, marketing manager at The Market Common, thinks the allure of the outdoor shopping lifestyle center is certainly due in part to its appearance. Simply stated, it is lovely.

“I think we have something for everybody,” Gravely said. “We have beautifully, landscaped streets. We have stores and restaurants you can’t find anywhere else in Myrtle Beach. Tommy Bahama, Barnes & Noble, Anthropologie, Williams-Sonoma and P.F. Chang’s China Bistro are among the businesses only found here on the Grand Strand.”

Like The Market Common, Ocean Reef Resort is special in its own way – it is the only resort in Myrtle Beach that has giant Tiki men guarding its water park, where children splash in play and adults tan poolside. It is where you can choose one, two or four bedroom condominiums. You have options.

The Market Common gives you options, too. It has 35 stores and eight restaurants centered on pristine landscapes and flattered by the serene beauty of nature.

Edith Strickland, 86, likes going to The Market Common with her gentleman friend of four years, Ted Ross, who is 94. Both are Grand Strand residents – she is a retired clerical worker, and he is a department store salesman.

“We enjoy visiting The Market Common,” Strickland said. “It has our favorite movie theater – Grand 14 Cinema. It’s a nicer theater and I love the atmosphere. The seats are really comfortable.”

When warm weather shows up, Strickland and Ross take advantage of the benches situated around the property and enjoy the uncomplicated splendor surrounding them.

“We love to sit by the fountain,” Strickland said. “We love looking at the beautiful flowers and shrubs out there. We also love P.F. Chang’s. It is one of our favorite restaurants. The Market Common is really an enjoyable place.”

Strickland and Ross are not alone in their fondness of The Market Common.

Walkers, runners and cyclists cherish the place. On any given day, especially early morning and late afternoon, dozens of outdoorsy types bustle about along the sidewalks before taking their workout through Valor Park before making the last stretch home.

Young professionals also migrate like those birds flying south in the winter to The Market Common. They come after work to socialize at the restaurants. They sit or stand and talk incessantly while downing margaritas at Nacho Hippo, beer at Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant or soak up live jazz at Travinia Italian Kitchen. They cannot deny there is enough of what they like and want to keep them coming back for more.

Africa Brown, 22, is one of them. She is a retail customer service manager and a graduate student at Webster University. Between those two roles and her weekend job cleaning condos, she doesn’t have time to hang with the happy hour crowd at The Market Common. Nevertheless, she makes certain to etch out time to go there.

“I like the architectural design,” Brown said. “It gives you a city feel with the restaurants and other businesses at the bottom of  buildings and the living spaces at the top. I also like the nice open spaces on the grounds, especially on a warm day when I like to sit down, eat and enjoy the scenery.”

Like Strickland and Ross, she most enjoys the theater at the Market Common and P.F. Chang’s.

“I love the seating at Grand 14 Cinema,” Brown said. “The theater is always clean and the seats are so comfortable. You can melt in them. I also love the fact that they have multiple showings of my favorite movies.”

Anytime she visits The Market Common she looks forward to dining at P.F. Chang’s.

“The best thing about The Market Common is the restaurants,” Brown said. “I love the authentic taste and ambience of P.F. Chang’s. It makes you feel like you are at a real Asian restaurant, and I appreciate the affordability of the menu items.”

Brown, however, thinks The Market Common can improve upon its shopping options.

“I don’t like the selection of shops,” Brown said. “The shops definitely appeal to the older generations. They need shops that appeal to younger clientele. Plus, I have issues with the pricing. The affordability of the shops is not realistic in these economic times.”

Christmas Eve the hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  On Christmas Day, The Market Common is closed.
