Thinking about getting engaged in Myrtle Beach? It’s a great way to make a lasting and romantic memory before you start your life together, as long as you know where to go to set the right mood and atmosphere. Here are our top five places to propose marriage on the Grand Strand:
Beach: This one may seem obvious since there is no more romantic place to pop the question than the beach. But there's more to it than simply walking down to the sand and taking a knee. Time and place are critical if you want to make the moment extra special. If you and your future bride are morning people, sunrise provides a beautiful setting to set the mood. Night owls might want to check for moonrise on a cloudless night since it also takes place to the east over the Atlantic Ocean. Although the beaches are relatively secluded, you may want to go for a stroll down the beach until you find just the right place and work up the nerve to ask.
Murrells Inlet: There's more in the salty, misty fog that often floats in off the ocean to cover this historic fishing village. Love is in the air too, and there are several romantic spots around town to express it. Brookgreen Gardens offers a beautiful backdrop of ancient live oak trees, colorful flowers and plants and awe-inspiring statues. Right across Highway 17, Huntington Beach State Park features scenic sand dunes and beaches, as well as Atalaya Castle. And a nice after-dinner stroll down the Murrells Inlet Marshwalk makes for a romantic venue for two.
Myrtle Beach SkyWheel: This can't-miss downtown attraction may look a bit too tacky for a romantic proposal, but the flashing neon lights aren't visible when you are riding on the high-tech ferris wheel. The enclosed gondolas give passengers a panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean and downtown district, making the ride a great place to pop the question. Spring for the VIP package, which includes a private gondola with a longer ride time so there's lots of room to drop on one knee, and plenty of time and privacy to finish the job. Also, wait until you reach the top of the 190-foot attraction for maximum effect.
Restaurants: Many couples prefer the more traditional formal setting such as an engagement dinner, and Ocean Reef guests are in luck. There are several romantic fine-dining restaurants within a couple of blocks of the resort, including the Boom Boom Wine Room, Collectors Cafe and Flamingo Grille. All offer an elegant environment and excellent food, drinks and service to make your experience more memorable. A couple of tips if you decide to go this route: Don't jump the gun and propose too early in dinner. Instead, wait until after dinner over dessert, coffee or drinks. Also, avoid the temptation to hide the ring in her favorite dessert. An accidental choking is a bad omen for a future wedding.
Thrill Ride: It takes a special kind of person to choose this option, but hey, marriage is like a roller coaster, right? For adventurous couples, an off-the-chain proposal is the only way to go. People have been known to pop the question while parasailing, bungee jumping, sky diving and other bizarre activities, and Myrtle Beach has plenty of venues to choose from. Ask for her hand while riding the Swamp Fox or the Rock 'N Roller Coaster at Family Kingdom, or during a gut-wrenching experience on the Slingshot or the Skyscraper in the downtown district. If you have a few butterflies in your stomach, this should settle them.
No matter where you decide to ask for her hand in marriage, be sure to book your wedding, honeymoon and future anniversary trips at Ocean Reef Resort in Myrtle Beach.
