Found about 10 miles south of Ocean Reef Resort near The Market Common on the Highway 17 Bypass, the Sandlapper Grill represents the latest in a decades-long run of restaurant work on the Grand Strand for Larry and his family, with past affiliations including Buddy’s Grill and the Salty Sailor Cafe. Their newest venture has a diner feel, with booths and tables lining the walls and running the length of the restaurant, while counter service is available for those looking to eat more quickly or strike up a friendly conversation with a fellow diner.
Boasting a “feel-good food” theme, the Sandlapper Grill’s menu is extensive, with appetizers, seafood, burgers, pasta, sandwiches & subs, soups & salads, and grilled specialties all well-represented. Southern cooking is also a focus, with regional dishes like fried chicken, chicken bog, fried okra, hush puppies and pulled pork on offer, and fried seafood offerings include creek shrimp, flounder, fantail shrimp, scallops and oysters, most of which are also available in Po Boy-style sandwiches. House specialties include chicken fingers, liver & onions, fish & chips, fish tacos and shrimp tacos, and grilled items on the menu include hamburger steak, fantail shrimp and whitefish.
The new restaurant’s name pays tribute to South Carolina’s early heritage, as use of the term “Sandlapper” is rumored to trace back to George Washington and the 18th century. Legend has it that when our nation’s first president visited the South Carolina Midlands in the late 1700s, he gave the “Sandlapper” name to natives of the state living on the sandy river shores.
