It’s a long weekend, you’re on vacation, and you’re at the beach — the list of reasons to kick back and relax during your Memorial Day weekend on the Grand Strand is without doubt a long one. And while, of course, drinking-age vacationers should be careful to consume in moderation and ensure they’ve got a safe way to get around once they have, enjoying a drink or two during a Myrtle Beach getaway is perfectly acceptable (and perhaps even recommended, depending on the crowd you’re spending time with).

So, without further ado, here are our top three picks for Memorial Day weekend drink choices at Ocean Reef Resort — and all three of them are available right on-site at our Pool Bar and in the Banana Boat Lounge:

Bloody Mary: Popular with many as a morning or midday drink, this cocktail contains vodka, tomato juice, and a range of spices and flavorful enhancements such as salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce and a celery-stick stirrer. The drink is said to be named for England’s Queen Mary I, who is known for burning more than 300 Protestants at the stake in her bloody campaign to restore Catholicism as England’s official religion.

Piña Colada: Often synonymous with tropical environments — and an especially good fit for sipping poolside or beachside in a warm, beach-y environment like the one found in Myrtle Beach in the summer — this sweet cocktail is made with rum, pineapple juice, and coconut cream or coconut milk. Its name means “strained pineapple” in Spanish, and legend has it that the drink, today regularly served frozen, was originally created by a Puerto Rican pirate in the 1800s. Bonus points if you knew that Rupert Holmes is the artist behind that catchy ’70s tune called “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” that’s now likely in your head — and if you like getting caught in the rain.

Rum Punch: Another drink that goes hand in hand with tropical locales, this fruity cocktail often features multiple varieties of rum (such as white, light, dark, spiced, coconut-flavored, etc.) along with pineapple juice, orange juice and a splash of grenadine. Once all of these island essentials are combined and served over ice, the drink is usually garnished with one or more fruit slices (think orange, pineapple, cherry, lemon and the like) — creating a perfect companion for sipping at the beach or by the pool.
