Myrtle Beach became famous for calabash shrimp and southern barbecue, but Mexican cuisine also thrives here. We’ve identified the five restaurants on the Grand Strand you should experience.
You’ll find authentic flavors and fiesta-inducing ingredients. Dishes in these eateries will give you more reasons to head for the coast.
1. Abuelo's Mexican Restaurant
Venture south of the border in this hacienda-style setting.
WHY ABUELO’S: Attentive service, a fabulous lunch menu, and generous portions. With beautiful decor and fresh ingredients, Abuelo’s pleases. From El Jefe Margaritas to Queso Diablo, to the Durango Burrito and Flan.
ADVICE: You can go meat-free with Vegetable Fajitas or Quesadilla al Horno. Gluten-free options include Guacamole and Soft Tacos.
2. Fiesta Mexicana
You’re in for an exhibition of authentic cuisine with a twist.
WHY FIESTA MEXICANA: The Aztec Soup, Steak Fajitas, and Cheese Dip. Also, the Chimichangas and Chips & Salsa. Did we mention the Frozen Margaritas and spicy shrimp dishes? All is fresh and unique at Fiesta Mexicana.
ADVICE: If the menu feels overwhelming, a safe bet is tacos. Tacos al Pastor features corn tortillas filled with chopped pork stir-fried with pineapple.
3. 5 De Mayo Mexican Restaurant

WHY 5 DE MAYO: Fast service, lovely surroundings, and thoughtful staff. They’ll kindly help with any food restrictions. Their vegetarian menu has opportunities for vegan choices, too. The tacos and chimichangas rock.
ADVICE: Give the Carne Asada and Shrimp a try. This land-and-sea entree is a favorite, and the moment it arrives at the table, you’ll see why!
4. La Poblanita Restaurant
This eatery is at the summit of delicious food in a low-key setting.
WHY LA POBLANITA: The service, the tacos, and the authenticity. Tacos are delicious and priced right. The lengua taco is popular, and the green salsa is so delicious you could almost drink it alone!
ADVICE: La Poblanita has incredible seafood dishes. Try the Mojarra. It’s the whole tilapia, cooked with garlic or deep fried, with salad, rice, and beans.
5. El Cerro Mexican Bar & Grill
Why travel far to find authentic cuisine with a flair for the fancy?
WHY EL CERRO: The flavors, the fare, and the space. You’ll have plenty of room at El Cerro to bring your traveling party. It’s a wonderful atmosphere, warm and inviting. Sit at the bar for dinner with a margarita and new friends.
ADVICE: You must try the El Cerro Special. It’s a ribeye, chicken, and shrimp grilled with onions and tomatoes. Served with jalapeno, rice, and beans.
